Why I watch the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Have you heard of the Ultimate Fighting Championship?

I have blogged about the UFC before and have talked about it many times with friends who don't watch it.

One question I get asked quite often is:

"What's so enjoyable about watching two people beat each other up?"

To be honest, I completely understand why people ask that question. If you've never watched the UFC before, it can seem like two people locked inside a cage trying their best to hurt each other. That's all some people ever see.

But that's not what I see.

I had a good think about it and I realised I don't watch the UFC because I enjoy violence. I watch it because I enjoy competition at its absolute highest level.

To me, the UFC is one of the most fascinating sports on Earth and here are the 10 top reasons why I watch the UFC.

10. This is the highest level of martial arts.

The UFC isn't just one martial art.

It's all of them.

Boxing.
Kickboxing.
Muay Thai.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Wrestling.
Judo.
Karate.
Taekwondo.

Every effective fighting style eventually finds its way into the Octagon.

The fighters competing today aren't specialists in just one discipline anymore. They have to become experts in almost everything.

If your boxing is world-class but your wrestling isn't, your opponent will expose it.

If your grappling is elite but your striking isn't, someone will knock you out.

The UFC represents decades of martial arts evolution. It has become the proving ground where only the techniques that truly work survive.

To me, that's fascinating.

9. It's the highest level chess match... physically and mentally.

People often compare sports to chess.

The UFC really is.

Every movement has a purpose.

Every feint is trying to draw a reaction.

Every jab is gathering information.

Every kick changes the distance.

Every takedown attempt forces your opponent to think differently.

Both fighters are constantly making calculations in real time.

"What happens if I throw this combination?"

"Will he shoot for my legs?"

"Is he expecting this kick?"

"What pattern has he noticed?"

The incredible part is that this chess match comes with real physical consequences.

In a normal game of chess, making a mistake means losing a queen. In the UFC, making one mistake can mean getting knocked unconscious Or waking up wondering what happened.

That pressure makes every second exciting.

8. The unpredictability

You really never ever know what's about to happen.

One fighter can dominate four rounds.

He's landing the better strikes.

He's winning the exchanges.

The commentators are already talking about how well he's fighting and how far in front he should be on the score cards...

...and then one perfectly timed left hook from his opponent changes everything.

The fight is over.

Or someone shoots for a takedown, leaves their neck exposed for just a second, and suddenly they're caught in a D'Arce choke, triangle choke or rear naked choke.

Fight over.

That's why I call the UFC the highest level physical chess match.

There is no room for mistakes.

Not even when you're winning.

The UFC also deserves enormous credit for its matchmaking.

The organisation consistently puts together fights where both athletes have realistic paths to victory. Before the fight even begins, fans are already debating who will win because both outcomes seem possible.

That uncertainty is what makes every event so compelling.

7. The sport never stops evolving

If you've never watched the very first UFC event, I highly recommend it.

Then watch a modern event.

The difference is astonishing.

The first UFC showed us which martial arts were effective.

Today's UFC shows us what happens after thirty years of continuous evolution.

Fighters are faster.

Smarter.

More technical.

More complete.

Techniques that were considered advanced twenty years ago are now basic skills.

Every new generation builds upon the last one.

Someone invents a new setup.

Someone else develops the perfect counter.

Then another fighter improves on that.

The sport never stands still.

That's one of the reasons I've never become bored with it.

There is always something new to learn.

6. The personalities

The fighters themselves make the UFC even more entertaining.

Some are humble.

Some are hilarious.

Some are respectful.

Others are masters at getting under their opponent's skin.

Take Conor McGregor, for example. Whether you loved him or hated him, he knew how to make every fight feel like a massive event.

Then you have someone like Max Holloway, whose positivity and willingness to fight anyone has earned him enormous respect from fans.

Or Israel Adesanya, who brings creativity and confidence every time he competes.

Or Alex Pereira, who barely says a word, yet somehow becomes even more intimidating because of it.

Every fighter has a different story.

Different personalities.

Different backgrounds.

Different motivations.

You end up supporting people not just because of how they fight, but because of who they are.

5. The drama

Every great fight has a story behind it.

Sometimes it's revenge.

Sometimes it's redemption.

Sometimes it's two unbeaten fighters trying to prove who is truly the best.

Sometimes it's a champion defending everything they've worked for against someone who believes it's finally their time.

Those stories make the fights even more meaningful.

When two rivals genuinely dislike each other, the anticipation becomes enormous.

When a fighter comes back after years of setbacks and finally wins a championship, it's hard not to feel happy for them.

The UFC isn't just about fighting.

It's about human stories.

4. Submission battles

Some people think nothing is happening once the fight goes to the ground.

In reality...

Sometimes that's when the most interesting part begins.

Ground fighting is another game of chess.

Every grip matters.

Every inch of movement matters.

One mistake can allow your opponent to escape.

Another mistake can cost you the fight.

One second you're trying to pass someone's guard.

The next second they're attacking your arm.

Then your neck.

Then suddenly you're tapping before your elbow snaps or before you go to sleep from a choke.

It's incredibly technical.

The better you understand it, the more exciting it becomes.

3. Knockouts

Let's be honest.

A spectacular knockout is one of the most exciting moments in all of sport.

Everything builds towards that single moment.

The tension.

The anticipation.

The timing.

Then... bang.

The entire arena explodes.

The beauty of a knockout isn't simply the power.

It's the precision.

Perfect timing.

Perfect distance.

Perfect execution.

Many times, I have seen one good punch change everything.

2. It's one of the purest tests of competition.

At its heart, the UFC is incredibly simple.

One person.

Versus another.

Everything you've learned.

Everything you've sacrificed.

Everything you've trained for.

When that cage door closes, excuses disappear.

It's just two highly skilled athletes trying to solve the same problem better than the other.

That's competition in one of its purest forms.

So no, I don't watch the UFC because I enjoy watching people hurt each other.

I watch it because I see strategy.

I see discipline.

I see courage.

I see years of dedication condensed into Fifteen (a 3 round fight) or twenty-five minutes (Championship fights or Main events are 5 rounds of 5 minutes each) where every decision matters.

1. The courage and determination of the fighters.

This is top reason why I watch the UFC and is something I have enormous respect for.

Imagine preparing for months knowing that on a particular date you'll walk into an arena in front of thousands of people and millions more watching around the world, to face one of the best fighters on the planet.

There is nowhere to hide.

No teammates to rescue you.

No substitutions.

Just you.

That takes courage most of us will never fully understand.

Win or lose, every fighter who steps into that Octagon has already earned my respect.

It is enormously inspirational for me to watch a man getting battered, eyes swollen from punches, bleeding from his nose and mouth, but still standing up to fight, refusing to give up. I am a determined person myself and I know it takes a special level of courage and determination to do what the UFC fighters do.

To me, the UFC is one of the greatest displays of human skill, resilience and competition that sport has to offer.

And that's why I keep coming back every single event.
